This week Bob and I sat down with Evan Saathoff of Badass Digest, known best for his film critic alter ego, Sam Strange! Marcel accidentally mixed up the timing of the interview due to timey wimey zoney woney-ness.
Evan starts off by telling us about his time in Taiwan, and then Marcel asks eighteen questions at once about Sam Strange and the origins of Sam Strange and the future of Sam Strange. We discuss the Oscar announcements (this was recorded days after), Evan’s favourite films of the year, the exciting upcoming Golden Globes (recorded before they aired). Evan loves classifying films as “interesting” rather than good or bad, which is awesome. Including, but not limited to, The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.
Much of the show is dedicated to the discussion of Tyler Perry, whom Sam covered at length for The Directors Club. And: Jack Reacher, Fantastic Fest and its many treasures, Wrong, penis museums and I Declare War.
We get into it about It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Mr. Show and Evan’s history with it, Honey Boo Boo, Dinner for Five (Check it out! Yes. Go do it), whether or not Jay Mohr is a jerk, Kevin Smith and Clerks: The Animated Series. Marcel inadvertently comes off as very negative towards Community, by accident, even though he loves Community. Evan defends it well.
Bob asks about Sam Strange, and Evan discusses the concept behind him and good entry points to his oeuvre. Then the show gets heady with a discussion of rich people with problems in movies and the representation of American life in film and television. Also, was Forrest Gump rich or poor?
What is that really old weird black and white zone place? Not The Far Side, right?
Towards the end, we discuss Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams’ secrets, Evan’s pretty awesome theory about spoilers, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Game of Thrones, and Bob recommends a book.
